Netware Tips

1. Licensing: To set up licensing properly after a Netware install type the following at the console prompt:
setupnls.nlm and log in with a distinguished name.

2. SLPDA Error: This is a cosmetic error which occurs after a setup of Netware 5.1 and the TID reads that it is only cosmetic. To research it further go to support.novell.com and do a search on SLP errors.
In the meantime, to temporarily get it to go away, type SLPDA at the command prompt and place slpda in the autoexec.ncf file of the server in question.

3.NW5SP5: On Gateway ALR7200 servers, after applying the Netware 5 Service Pack you may get an error trying to restart your server. The error will hang the server at the AIC78U2.HAM driver, on the second occurence of this driver. To remedy this, simply back your old AIC78U2.HAM driver up on a floppy (it fits) and place it on the server after a patch. Then your server will load properly and you'll have all the benefits of SP5.

4.Imaging: To make a verbatim copy of an old server, and use this copy to bring a new server into operation, try a product called ImageCast. This product will let you copy sector by sector your old HDD, and you merely have to change a driver or two and you are back on the air, files and all.

5.To mount your DOS boot partition from a Netware volume, type this (NW5 or greater only) at the console prompt: DOSFAT.NSS.

6.Single tree: If you operate several servers across different WAN links like I do, you may find it useful to give ROOT admin global explict rights to all subcontainers. This way, when logging in you always have adequate rights to anything you need to change. Take the time to learn distinguished naming, it is worth it.
